Brief History of Smileys

Smileys have become a part and particle of the way how we communicate. From IMs to SMS we use Smileys everywhere to convey our emotions. They are rightly also called as Emoticons. My quest, to know who came up with this novel way of expressing, lead me to this info. There are various versions as to who first started using Smileys. The use of Smileys has been documented as early as 1963!

One Version goes this way:-
Richard Ball, co-owner of an advertising and public relations firm in Worcester, designed the Smiley Face in 1963 to help ease the acrimonious aftermath following the merger of two insurance companies.

The Second version says:-
In 1979, Kevin Mackenzie first used the -) symbol, which meant “tongue in cheek”. The technique didn’t appear to catch on, and it remained for another to start the fad.

The Third version (the one with detailed info available and perhaps most convincing):-
Between 1981 and mid-1982, emoticons are believed to have been invented by Scott Fahlman on the CMU bulletin board system. This board was similar in concept to today’s newsgroups or message boards, and was intended as a place for people to chat and have discussions. Scott noticed a problem on the board: people would post a humorous comment, but others would not get the joke. This led to countless flames and meaningless discussions.

Scott suggested the use of :-) to show pleasure (or indicate a joke) and :-( to show displeasure. This usage caught on like wildfire all over the place, and before long you could see this usage everywhere.
Whatever the history behind Smileys, its no denying fact that Smileys help us greatly to communicate and express our feelings which words cant. Facebook is synonymous with social network these days, what better way to express yourself to the world than using smileys on facebook. Keep reading to know more about facebook smileys
